Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well. Today, I am here to tell you about my experience on creating teaching material by integrating corpus which means a storage of written or spoken material on a computer. It can be used to identify the frequency of certain words or phrases. We wanted to prepare a material that is focused on the difference of the verbs “say” and “tell” so throughout the material we tried to encourage students to use https://www.english-corpora.org/register.asp to check the frequency of the word that are often paired with the chosen verbs. While we are doing that, we also made sure to create a lesson plan that is in line with the ASSURE model (see below).

Here, I’m leaving the link of our material. Don’t forget to tell me what you think.
To reflect on the material and corpus use, I would say that it is incredibly difficult to implement it in a real classroom environment. Even me and my friends had a hard time trying to figure the website out despite the guidelines we had. I think teachers would lose their minds if they were to introduce it to kids (I’m not even gonna mention the effect of the number of students in the classroom). On top of that, problems related to technical difficulties still occur in schools so it might not be the best choice to teach the subject like this since it would take a lot more time and effort than it normally should. However, I see no problem letting the students know the very existence of the website. Maybe the teacher might use it in the classroom to introduce it to them and the ones who are interested can use it. There is no doubt that it’s useful but it’s just not convenient.
What do you think? Have you ever heard of corpus before? Would you like to use it in your learning or teaching experience? Let me know in the comments!
