Hey there, today I will be talking about flipped classroom approach. In this approach, the instructions about a topic is not included to the real classroom time. Instead, teachers prepare teaching materials and record themselves beforehand. Then, they ask students to watch it before coming to the class. It provides them with more classroom time which they can use to exercise what they learned -of course with the help of the teacher. So my assignment was to create a teaching video for a flipped EFL classroom. We were a group of four and were given a chance to choose between vocabulary and grammar. My group and I chose vocabulary and set our unit as “Fitness” from the 5th grade English lesson book. Here’s our teaching material: https://www.canva.com/design/DAGYtpIsn_s/TTIeyNDt5bN-8Q3mV_n0Uw/edit?utm_content=DAGYtpIsn_s&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton
In addition to the material, we also created a checkpoint to help the students assess their learning experience before the lesson. To see it, click https://wordwall.net/play/83830/667/315
To me, the disadvantages of the approach easily outweigh the advantages. It kind of overlooks the advantages of interaction between the students in the classroom while learning a subject. For some students, these interactions may provide affective depth and contribute to their learning process. It was also very hard for us to find another tools that we can prepare what we had in mind so we had to turn to Canva since we know how to use it. I think it was a lot more time consuming than to actually teach to topic in class and observe their reactions. Our group neither enjoyed the approach nor the assignment.
What do you think about flipped classrooms and our materials? Do you think it’s helpful and would you use it as a way of teaching? Let me know in the comments! See you in the next post, take care!
